A quick overview of ETFE


Widely referred to as a ‘next generation’ material within modern architecture or sometimes known as the ‘bubble-dome roof’ or ‘inflatable roof’, ETFE or Ethylene-Tetra-Fluoro-Ethylene is being increasingly used to provide visually impactful coverings at stadiums, shopping centres, airports, schools, theatres and leisure complexes, to name just a few places.

But it’s not just the use of ETFE that is evolving – our knowledge of this innovative co-polymer is continually progressing too. In fact, with years’ experience of inspecting, maintaining and repairing ETFE roofs, canopies and structures throughout the UK and overseas, our height experts are well-equipped to ensure you maximise the longevity of your ETFE assets.

The elasticity, resistance and strength of ETFE means structures can enjoy a design life of 50-60 years, if designed-well. But that doesn’t mean they don’t require inspections and maintenance to prevent degradation.

Whilst many ETFE structures are self-cleaning, that’s not to say they don’t require attention. An incident as simple as a bird-pecked hole could present the need for a pillow repair, for example. But structured annual or biennial maintenance regimes will also ensure the optimum performance of the ETFE roof, before issues arise. Pressure readings can be monitored via routine inspections, and existing hole or seam repairs can be monitored before they become a major concern. Any necessary maintenance works can then be carried out proactively, as and when required, to reduce repair costs in the long term, and help uphold the properties of the ETFE and its steel structure, for years to come.

Once we’ve received an enquiry from a client, we will most likely arrange a suitable date for a site visit, to assess the condition of the structure, before providing a competitive quotation for your requirements. We don’t need to erect scaffolding or hire expensive machinery.

We use rope access techniques to carry out the majority of our work-at-height, which is a more cost-effective and eco-friendly approach too.

Routine & efficiency


Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)

If you want to ensure the optimum condition and performance of your ETFE structure, a routine maintenance regime will help to maintain its longevity and will provide you with peace-of-mind that your roof is safe and functioning optimally.

This doesn’t mean we’ll need to constantly visit your site – quite the opposite in fact. Following an initial inspection and report, we can devise a planned schedule of work according to what needs doing and when. Then, after any immediate repairs, we will put forward our recommendations to efficiently maximise the quality and life-span of your asset. We even use a proactive cloud reporting tool – Acqudo© – to log all maintenance works, so you are constantly in the loop with a LIVE report!

That’s not to say we can prevent the unexpected. Sometimes our ETFE specialists are called out to conduct emergency repairs to bird-pecked holes, for instance, and we have a wide range of ETFE solutions to hand if this happens. But such reactive maintenance will be minimal if all other works have been carried out with the foresight of our ETFE experts.

In case of emergency…

Whilst life would be a lot easier if we could all plan for everything, sometimes the unexpected happens! The key thing is to ensure you have a support structure in place, should an ETFE emergency call out be required.

With response teams throughout the country, we can be with you just at the time when you really need us. This means that, the aftermath of a bird strike, for example, can be repaired before it causes any disruption.
