Height safety - Preventing falls from height
One of the biggest causes of fatalities and major injuries comes from falls from height. Employers, employees and contractors working at height have a legal responsibility to ensure that suitable precautions to prevent someone falling 'a distance liable to cause personal injury (for example a fall through a fragile roof)' are in place.
When planning work at height, the following steps should be considered:
- Can working at height be avoided completely? For example, could the works be completed from ground level using alternative equipment, or could rooftop equipment be relocated to ground level?
- If there is no alternative other than to work at height, then installation of suitable 'collective' fall prevention equipment will provide protection to anyone having to work from height. Solutions can include perimeter guard rail, walkways, ladders and gantries.
- Where steps 1 and 2 are not possible, a 'personal protection system' should be available. This may include work restraints or fall arrest systems in order to minimise the distance of a fall, should it occur.
As fall protection and prevention experts, Access North Ltd supply comprehensive design, installation, inspection, certification & testing and maintenance services for both temporary and permanent fall protection and prevention systems and equipment, in accordance with current British and European standards.
We work with facilities managers, construction firms, property owners and contractors throughout the UK; whilst every job is different, the priority is always to ensure a safe environment for anyone working from height.

Inspections, testing & certification
When it comes to fall protection, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution. Every building is different and so are the risks. That’s why our experienced technicians don’t just tick boxes; they act as the ‘competent person’ under British Standards to make sure your systems are genuinely safe and fit for purpose.
We carry out thorough inspections on fall arrest and fall restraint systems, assessing every component for wear, damage and compliance. If issues are identified, we’ll advise on the most effective solution - whether that’s a straightforward repair, a full refurbishment, or a system redesign to meet current regulations. Where upgrades are needed, we ensure they’re future-proofed against both safety requirements and the practical demands of your site.
We also provide training, giving your team the knowledge and confidence to use the systems correctly day-to-day. Because having equipment in place is one thing but knowing how to use it safely is another.
At Access North, we approach each project as unique. Different roof layouts, access requirements and building uses call for different strategies. Our fall protection specialists recommend only what’s right for your environment, whether that’s fixed lifelines, guardrails, anchors, or a combination of systems designed around your site.
The result? Fall protection that isn’t just compliant on paper, but safe, practical and reliable in the real world.

Routine maintenance regimes
Fall protection systems can only do their job if they’re kept in top condition. That’s why we offer planned preventative maintenance regimes, tailored to your site and equipment. Whether you manage a single building or a multi-site estate, our contracts ensure your systems stay safe, compliant and ready for use - without stretching your maintenance budget.
Every visit is logged in our cloud-based reporting platform, giving you a clear digital record of inspections, test results and any remedial work.
The result? Peace of mind that your fall protection is being actively managed - with less admin for you and no nasty surprises at audit time.
